The Month Before Poem by Eve Brideau

The Month Before

(08.23.09 2250H)

The day’s July the twenty-third
When I breathed life to what they’ve heard.
With the letter in my right, I stood there proud
And didn’t give a damn to the growing crowd.

Thy boss came toward me, at last.
Told me, “Isn’t it too soon, too fast? ”
I wanted to agree, but I was stunned
When the words spewed out were, “No, I’m done.”

As I walked onwards, I started to regret
And wished my fellow mates wouldn’t be upset.
How badly I want to stop and go back to my post
To be with them again, my friends the most.

Reached the ‘quarters, then I know
That after this, it’s time to let go.
Some time later, I heard my cue
“You’re now free; peace be with you.”

I left, trembling, and got out of their sight
And from there, I felt some sort of delight
For today and tomorrow, I’m a free man
Free to do everything that I once can.
