The Man From Ballydesmond Poem by Francis Duggan

The Man From Ballydesmond

The man from Ballydesmond his hair is silver gray
And he doesn't talk of green fields and mountains far away
His favourite topics Collingwood and Australian rules football
And he think that Australia is the greatest Land of all.

The man from Ballydesmond for distant fields doesn't pine
With his dog on the beach at Shoreham he jogs in the sunshine
You ask him of Duhallow he only smile and say
A lot of rain and frost and snow before the flowers of May.

He has lived in Australia for two thirds of his life
And the man from Ballydesmond he has an Aussie wife
Two sons and four Grandchildren he love this Southern Land
And nostalgia and homesickness he does not understand.

The man from Ballydesmond is not a pub going sort
He says such institutions do not have my support
After tea at seven I drink a glass of wine
Or sometimes a small brandy when I am out to dine.

For nostalgia or homesickness in his heart there's no spot
The man from Ballydesmond is happy with his lot
Along the quiet beach at Shoreham before breakfast he jog
And with him his blue heeler his faithful Aussie dog.
