The Magpie Lark Poem by Francis Duggan

The Magpie Lark

The magpie lark known to some as Pee wee
Builds nest of mud on fork or branch of tree
And in her cup shaped nest lined with dried grass she lay
Three to five eggs with brown spots through the gray.

They wear the magpie colours white and black
And at nesting time all foes they will attack
And they even tackle crows and birds of prey
From their nest site they keep all foes away.

At home in country paddock or town park
Is Australia's most familiar magpie lark
And pee wee pee wee the only notes she play
I know that voice I hear it every day.

Pee wee pee wee in rain or in sunshine
The magpie lark that favourite bird of mine
Pee wee pee wee I hear that voice again
You hear it once and the song with you remain.

The magpie lark sing twelve months of the year
And pee wee pee wee familiar to my ear
She wears the magpie colours white and black
And at nesting time all foes she will attack.
