The Macedonian Dawn Wedding (Titovo Veles) Poem by Peter Russell

The Macedonian Dawn Wedding (Titovo Veles)

Planetary music made with gong
With clarinet and flute and violin
An earthly din to constitute
An image of eternal song

Moon-lady with your amber lyre
Old tortoise with your cat-gut string
Fat minstrel bring Apollo's fire
With golden wire attuned and sing

The planets round the smouldering hearth
The zodiac round the sorrowing head
Like dancers tread their heavenly path
About dull earth and wake the dead

What is this mystery that we hear
Enchanting daily age and youth?
From sounds uncouth a concord clear
The mathematic heart of Ruth

Assuaging gloom, destroying fear,
With perfect forms in memory's ear -
Imagination striking Truth
Eternal sorrow tear by tear
