The Light Is Gone Out Poem by Emmanuel Odei Oduro

The Light Is Gone Out

The light is gone out
Darkness has dawned
Our community is confounded
The great globe grieves
For that saintly soul
Who lived his whole life
Pursuing the principal point
Of regularising racial equality
And establishing ethnic equity
The studied support of our society

The light is gone out
The exceedingly esteemed icon
Who made supreme sacrifice
Issued forth Christ-like forgiveness
The magnet maintaining our unity
The soul of our struggle
The sample of self-less souls
The dominant determinant
Of our successful switch
Has sadly been snatched from us

The light is gone out
Like one celebrity commented
In a similar situation:
‘The light has gone out of our lives
And there is darkness everywhere’
We’ve been thrown, terribly
Into distasteful dimness
We grope in dreadful darkness
Confounded, concerned and cut off
Separated from this scarce human species
Whose wise collection of counsels
Magnet-like personality
Have been the formidable formula
That ensured our series of successes

The light is gone out
Making visible a vast vacuum
Can we replace this Great man?
He made a distinct difference
Crystal clear and commanding
No wonder our wonted worried world
Came to a striking, startling stand-still
At the news of his passing on

At this our moment of mourning
Our only prayer as by protocol
To the All-knowing God is
May His soul rest in perfect peace
