The Lies We Tell Poem by Viola Grey

The Lies We Tell

Rating: 3.6

The lies we tell,
stories we sell
to keep this love alive.
Truth betrays
what we say
in order to survive.
What emotions shed
are easily misread
when blind eyes open.
How we pretend
time spent
keeps souls unbroken.
If I really love you,
as I say I do,
goodbye should be said.
But, no - I'll cajoul,
make you a fool,
anchor you here instead.

With deference to Fred Babbin ('But Not Forever' and 'Did I Say That? ' are wonderful poems) , I like the rhythm of your poem Viola, specifically because of the way you conveyed the sentiment. The wonder of poetry is that to some degree, we explore our articulation of how we feel or what we see different than simply conversing about it. I liked the flow of the poem and the airy quality to it. Perhaps, I liked because it was not a dreary, sullen poem about lies and distrust. I think it is wonderful.

The serious work at rhyming makes the poem a little sing-songy. A little bit uncomfortable considering the subject and the sentiment.

Beautifully and logically … yes, sincere and tactful 'compromise' it is possible to rescue love …
