The Katydid's Song Of Mourning

The Katydid’s Song of Mourning
Opus 127

Katy did what Katy did,
The Katydid’s song of Mourning,
And rubbed her wings at once amid
The frightful dance of horning.

‘ Tis summer time and air is humid
And all for one was distant longing
And I did what I did
For want of any belonging.

Katy did it! Katy did it!
I said with voice so shrill,
She said, “I had a fit
That led us to the kill.”

Katy said what Katy said
For fear of being rejected,
And I said what I said
So I could be connected.

We both did what we both did
And no one else suspected.
After that our feelings hid
So we would be respected.

The hidden feelings made us sick
And we were both dejected.
The time went by so very quick;
Our deeds were soon detected.

We all do what we often do,
Because of constant longing.
But we did what we did
To send an outward warning.
