The House Next Door Poem by Karen Verdello

The House Next Door

Sitting cold and empty
Exposed, wanting and alone
Drapes hang wide open
Allowing prying eyes to find
The empty space to be forgotten
That lies quietly inside

But it wasn't always like this
This deathly dying scene
Once it bloomed and blossomed
And sparkled with all things light
It rattled with gay abandonment
And sang of cherished delight

But death came all too quickly
And took away that light
It cloaked that house in shadow
And bought them to the knee
It delved the depths of loneliness
And silenced any glee

Now they have moved away
To where I am unsure
Perhaps it is to a warmer place
To climes of greater right
To a place where broken people
Can grow back toward the light
