The High And The Low Poem by Venkateswaran Krishnan Sreenivasan

The High And The Low

The rich and the poor, the high and the low
Set human beings as a race apart
From animals, amongst whom we don’t know
But the strong and the weak and the fast and the slow

The master and the slave, the saint and the savant
The mistress and the maid, the landlord and tenant
All were made equal but do not grow
To equal heights; why we do not know

The earth is the stage where all creatures play
Man is the master and an actor in the show
The strong subdues and eats up its prey
The grandmaster unseen watches its woe

Man kills man in a way most inhuman
Animals kill for food but not their clan
We are taught morals drafted into laws
That are flouted often because of the flaws
