The Heart Goes On Beating Poem by Olivia Estampador

The Heart Goes On Beating

The beating of my heart goes on
Even if I had to leave a part of it
To a place I’ve been before
But never will be at anymore.

The beating of my heart goes on
Same as the way hers do right now.
And that fire, smoldering in her eyes,
Had burned my skin once.

The beating of my heart goes on
As I see the love escalate, intensify,
Reverberate and echo in stillness, in silence.
“Against all odds.” At last she said.

She saw my cannot be as should be,
My black as her dirty white.
When I had to let go, she held on.
When I had to walk away, she remained.

These are different circumstances, indeed.
But what is there to think,
To weigh and to consider,
When the result is the same, no different at all?

“Supposed to be, should be”
Don’t know what to say, what to do
What is right; what is wrong
When it is love she is fighting for all along?

A love that runs opposite the one
All of us, besides her, stood for.
We forsake the love she embraced
And bled for the love she turned against.

Still, my heart, her heart—our hearts
Shall, should, must go on beating
Even if it floats on tears
No matter how many stitches love brings.
