The Happy Man In The Chinese Restaurant: Part 1 No Bills To Pay Poem by Nim Lee

The Happy Man In The Chinese Restaurant: Part 1 No Bills To Pay

We was in Georgetown, sheltering from the rain
In the Chinese restaurant with the smelly drain
And the rain fell down more hard
And de stink got more rough
And a’ we in the shelter, we began to gaff.

And the man in the raggedy shirt began to boast
That of all the men there he had de most.
‘Cos, he said, he slept on the pave and he don’t want no house
He don’t want pay no rent
He don’t tek no worry
He got no bills to pay, no bills to pay, no bills to pay,
He a happy man, no bills to pay.

The East Indian man with no front teeth
And his cardboard under his arm, to keep it from wet and harm
Began to dance and sing
To clap his hand and grin
And join in the raggedy man beat:
No bills to pay, no bills to pay, no bills to pay
A’ we happy men, no bills to pay.

Then that day in Georgetown it ceased to rain
And a’ we stuck in the Chinese restaurant, the one with the smelly drain
Found we all marooned there, the water raised, the floods had come
We had to paddle through the stinky water
To get back to our houses our duties our jobs.
While the two free men, the two happy men
Continued their song:
No bills to pay, no bills to pay, no bills to pay
A’ we happy men, no bills to pay.
