The Gravy Cake

Rating: 4.9

One time my mother made a cake,
As lovely as could be.
This time she did no frosting make,
But caramel sauce, you see.

For lunch we had a nice beef roast
With spuds and gravy, too.
The gravy looked just like the sauce;
Sounds crazy, but it's true.

My father cut himself a slice
Of cake, and boy, did it look nice!
He topped it off with what he thought
Was caramel sauce, and then he said
Did I put gravy on that instead?

All it took was a little dip
Of his small finger, just the tip
To prove that yes, in fact he had
Put gravy on it, my poor dad!

My mom was gone; she'd had to leave
For some church meeting, I believe.
When she got home, to her delight
Sat that nice cake, a lovely sight!

She grabbed a fork and took a bite,
And I think you know, my friends,
How this sad story ends.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
True story. The cake looked so good, nobody wanted to throw it away. We didn't deliberately sabotage Mother, we just pushed the cake aside and left it there.

The picture is of my father as a young man, probably a little younger than when he put the gravy on the cake.

I SEE another comment has been left by you on one of my 'my english sucks' poems. i could not recall your name when i saw it. no photo or bio do i see. but i DID think this title familiar and the poem i certainly recognized. i may not have sent it yet to MyPoemList, but now i shall. your page now shows you as being a 'friend' of mine, and i suppose you were in my friends list. but i pared it down considerably recently for various reasons. now i'll add you again, just in case! if you would care to share this or another of your poems in what i call my 'monthly (usually) showcase for PH poets', where i display in one place, on my PH site, the poems of some of my PH friends, let me know. or ask questions of me. did the gravy taste ok on the meat at least? ? bri :)
