The Gifted Amateur Poem by Ananta Madhavan

The Gifted Amateur

Like skaters or skiers,
Or dancers and divers,
Like the crossword puzzler,
The mate and the joker,
The poets of the day
Are every-man and you,
The gifted amateur.

The gift is variable,
Like the verses and the yen
To say something unsaid,
But not unsayable.
The gift includes the donor,
Who wishes someone else
Would find the words and pulse
Of feelings too fleet for phrase,
Of passion so rarely genuine.

I keep trying to find out what is truly modern and genuine feeling in poetry; I wish to find words and phrases that are original in implying meaning and emotions suited to our contemporary world.
