The Game Poem by Sophie Nixon

The Game

Oh to be the fool again
to spend the days in future tense
when eternal sunshine held my gaze
and the endless days
bathed in a summer haze
until I lead myself astray
and the ivory tower burned

I looked to the hanged man
to calm the sea inside
surrendered strength for a different view
gave up me when I found you
as the priestess whispered

Lovers is a choice
and the choice was never mine
but man will always take his toll
so take this coin and take this soul
and chain me to the Devil

Death is on the cards
with ticking clock and turning wheel
I hang in the balance
waiting
for the fate
that I made
to fade
