The Game Poem by Tsunami HiroshiSu

The Game

We weren’t winning
The game wasn’t tied
We were losing
Flat out losing
The crowd was disheartened and silent
The cheerleaders had put down their pompoms
The band was putting away their instruments
Most of the fans had gone home
Our tea was tired and couldn’t continue
We were nine, no, ten points behind
Suddenly, out of the crowd of disappearing fans
One stood up
That one began to cheer
The crowd paused on the way to the exit
The band froze while putting away their instruments
The cheer leaders picked up their pompoms
The crowd began to cheer
The band began to play
The cheer leaders shook their pompoms
Home team smiled
We picked up the pace
And though we were tired, we played harder
We were behind by nine now
The band played faster
We were eight, no, seven points behind
We were catching up
We were six points behind
The cheer leaders hoisted one another into the air
We were five, no, four points behind
We were almost tied
We were three points behind
The crowd stomped their feet and clapped their hands
We were two, no, one point behind
The crowd cheered louder
There was one minute to go
We played harder
Thirty seconds to go
We played faster
Fifteen seconds to go
We played with all the strength we had left
Ten seconds to go
If we go into overtime we will lose
Eight seconds to go
All noise was blocked from my ears
Six seconds to go
All I could here was the beat of the ball on the floor
Four seconds to go
Time seemed to slow down
Two seconds to go
We scored!
Time’s up!
We’ve won!
And all because of a single, solitary, devoted fan.
