The First Day Of Winter Poem by Nishtha Trivedi

The First Day Of Winter

Rating: 4.5

The sun's warm glow smiled
every day on me,
the wind picked me up
to dance amongst the trees,
the grassy fields of the earth
tickled the soles of my feet,
the rain, random as it was;
with every drop I felt free.

And for a decade of my life,
there wasn't a single thing I needed,
just the comfort of my second home;
just summer and blue skies.

I lived in this cocoon;
encouraged, cherished, protected.
the first version of the real world,
and what a rosy picture it depicted!
every moment spent without a care,
guarded from everything convoluted.

Undoubtedly moments of doubt arose,
and one mistake caused another,
with troubles that stole away faith, or friends, or fun
and yet the warmth never died.

I evolved, and every day brought new dreams,
the world felt just within my reach,
responsibilities began to creep up on me-
the mystery of the future, conquering each

thought in my mind, until
the clock struck loud, and an unforeseen
chill set in my heart, while the icy winds
have now pushed open the door.

At the threshold, one foot in warmth,
and one foot in woe,
a lifetime's worth of memories
and suddenly I'm asked to let go,
leap out of the nest, fly or fall
with the past decade as my wings.

Time flies,
the clouds cover the blue sky,
yet this moment feels frozen,
for this is the last day of summer,
the inevitable is here,
it's time to face the cold.
