The Firefly Of Empathy

Your feeble eyes
Scathed by the blades of reality
Hemorrhaging of her residual hope
As the dawn of tomorrow
Is veiled by an endless twilight

Where each night unfolds
In the vacuity of yourself
Within your cocoon
As your own genetic heirloom
Treacherously schemed
Against your very self
As precious life was ebbed from you

As your tomorrow surrenders
To the shadow of yesterday
As your vestigial light relinquishes
To an eclipse of the heart

For melancholy is
Like a cave in the absence of light
A stranger to sunshine
With no impression of day or night

As I gaze at your world
Wondering whether I should step in
To rescue my damsel
To summon fate
To pave a crossroad of hope

Yet I am no effulgent sun
Nor am I the glistening moon
Merely a dainty firefly
A speck of light
Within your boundless darkness

I will not consume you
Nor will I blind you
For what I aspire
Is to be a beacon
To your footsteps in the dark

For you to step out
Of your cave
To gaze at the sunshine
For then I will disappear
In the fogs of light

For our love my love
Was spawned of need
And not of want

For empathy is no substitute
For love

Only a glorified placebo......

Poem of the Day

poet Charles Stuart Calverley

He stood, a worn-out City clerk —
Who'd toil'd, and seen no holiday,
For forty years from dawn to dark —
Alone beside Caermarthen Bay.
