The Farmer And His Tree Poem by Jasmine Fafanyo Awagah

The Farmer And His Tree

I remember the seed
and I remember my deed
because I remember my digging
and also I remember my planting
I remember my sweat
Crawling off me to wet
The ground
I grounded myself not to be indoors
But outdoors looking for a blossom
I melted my heart and it pours
Bleeding red, the custom
I tanned my image
Like a refugee in a desert
Its true i am savaged
Don't mistake me for one of them perverts
Yet it is for the purpose of reproduction
So that whatever existed between you and i
Will never die
Even when we face our eviction

Our show just started
From seeds, the creeping seedling sees adulting,
Gradually it stands, no more a hatchling
Cells multiplying, organs developing quickly
And now your leafs are spreading
They are braided, So you pose proudly
In you the bees are hiving
but since you stand so tall, i can't reach you, the honey
please snap out if it

Because our show just started

you attract the insects, your petals

I stand here still in torn sandals
to you i stand in your phlegm

Those insects may sting but it kills them
You can't always keep what is mine
Gravity will pull them down from you
to me and you know it don't deny
A force still binds and bonds us true
I love you and as much as you don't want me anymore
give me the respect due
One day those petals will wither
In that season the sun storms the weather
You will need me to to water you,
talk to you and love you

And I will because I did, and still love you

You are my tree, I the farmer
I am just the farmer who wants his harvest
You will always be the tree who can't forget the farmer
I killed your pests when you failed the test
No matter how tall you've grown
You are still within my reach
I can still wear someone the gown
A farmer is always ready to start all over
That's what makes him rich

I am just a farmer, and you are my tree
I will always love you
If I'm dead to you
my body be laid by your high heel shoes, your roots
Make you strong till uproot
That way I am free
After all I'm just a farmer, you my tree
Its my choice to sell the land
It's my brand, it can go for free
It is my will
I still have the goodwill
