The Eyes Of A Spider Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

The Eyes Of A Spider

Somebody should have warned him!
Or maybe he came to his fate willingly.
At least he died in the act of coitus.
Maybe that is every man’s dream.

Maybe he thought he was safe.
Sneaking up silently from behind,
Hoping to catch me unaware,
Deep in meditation,
Self-Adoration,
Abluting my lovely limbs with dew.

I sat silently in my frangipani tree, an exotic blossom lacking only fragrance,
Allowing my neighbors to cover me with the scent of their pollen
Digesting a sphinx moth who had fluttered into my clutches.
For I am the Orchid Mantis,
The Queen of the Night.

It was daybreak.
I admit that my appetite was indeed sated.
I had no need to feed yet again.
But one does not approach the Queen with base intentions.
This traveling warrior, in his plain green armor, attempted to take me by brute force.
I have no idea what goes on in his lands,
But here, it is I who reign!

What he could not have known is that I have the eyes of a spider.
Each mate I consume becomes a part of me.
Like the warriors who ate the heart of their enemies in order to take on their strength, their prowess in battle,
I take into myself the very best of my mates.
Each adds a new perspective to my wisdom,
A new talent to my range,
A new facet to my cunning,
A new eye to my head.

My eyesight is not limited to just two, or even three eyes.

I see in every direction.
I see in every color.
I see in every dimension.

So beware!

Approach me with caution.
Approach me in beauty.
Approach me with reverence.

Or do not approach me at all.

If you come to me bearing the proper offering: yourself,
I will take you in ecstasy,
Releasing you into a world of pure energy.
You will be forever me, forever free.
Forever One.

My arms reach out to you.
Dare you fall into their embrace?
