The Errant Seagull Poem by JAMES T. ADAIR

The Errant Seagull

There in the cotton candy blue sky
Before my eye
I noticed the seagulls flying by
dipping to the water for silver fish
and returning high
but one landed on the sand
turned her head and shrieked
and waddled toward my hand
as if she was curious
wanted food
or wanted to make a friend
but she walked right past my hand
and next to me
as if this is where she wanted to be
and I thought it so strange
but she felt warm and pure
and sitting there suddenly felt so secure
Then the sun came out
And the children flew their kites
The tide rolled back in
As swimmers tired of their swim
And everyone left
As day turned to dusk
and sunset turned to night
But there she still sits
safe she feels with me, safer than in flight
I look at her dark eyes and feel tenderness
Surprising even myself I give her a kiss
her feathers ruffle as if in bliss
In this feeling I closed my eyes
and later on my cheek I felt a warm soft kiss
I was startled, wondered what was this?
Startled even now as I reminisce
The feathery gull was no longer there
Just a beautiful face and soft silky hair
A Princess was there in her place
Her beautiful figure sharing my space
and she whispered in a soft coo
'I was sent to ever be with you'
And the rest is history now
But the story is not through
I dreamed we had a home and a family too
And each night when the day is through
She cares for me and never leaves me blue
But fairytales never come true…..
By the sea shore, In the sun
With sky of cotton candy blue
The errant seagull, I thought she was you.
