The Emigrant Poem by Damien Martin O'Dowd

The Emigrant

Rating: 3.5

Good Bye she said to me God Bless,
And touched her hand upon my chest,
And blessed me from the holy font,
with worn Instruction 'in God we trust'

Good Bye he said to me God Bless,
With fierce pride woven on furrowed face
A face so handsome when he was young
A face that bore the sun and moon

Good Bye she said to me God Bless
With lonely eye and loving face
And parting from her warm embrace
I left her like a mother’s son

Good Bye he said to me God Bless
Two strong hands meet
Two strong hands shake
With little said and lesser done
I left him like a father’s son.
