The Dry Lands Poem by Somanathan Iyer

The Dry Lands

after the summer when the rains wet the lands
start suddenly activities at country side
cattle and ploughs furrow the dry lands
the lands in vast stretches of red soil
get thoroughly tilled presenting a look of red carpet
birds of many types flock the place
to enjoy the feast of insects they like
worms and insects surface from the depths
in varied colors and varied forms
smooth and silky red insects
tough and hard green insects
pink and white large insects
and many a size of soil worms
crawl out only to be swallowed
by waiting birds that keep hopping along
seeds are dropped along with the furrow
to cultivate rain dependent pulses and cereals
if the rains are regular the yield will be higher
the landscape transforms many a colors
once dry then reddish now a look of green carpet
