I see a dove outside my window
As many another year.
She sits on her nest
That she made in my grapevine.
Day after day and week after week she sits,
Dedicated to the eggs that will hatch
and become her offspring.
She sees me when I walk by,
But does not fly, even though
I pass within 3 feet.
Her task is too important
To submit to fear.
The male, if there, will fly
To distract me from the nest.
But not the mother of the doves!
Should she have been honored
On Mother’s Day?
Interesting thought, to honor a bird on Mother's Day! The dove in the picture appears to me a mourning dove. There were many of those around where I grew up. I'll bet if you walked closer than three feet, she would fly away, but just let her rest there. Enjoyed the poem.
Yes it is. They are finding out that birds are smarter than anyone thought.

A very fine dedication on Mother's day! The mother dove is so committed to her duty and wants to make sure that the eggs are neatly hatched and her fledglings are sufficiently fed and well protected. Even when the male bird flies away in fear, the mother bird never deserts her eggs! It is a mother's commitment! It is so interesting to watch birds and I am sure you enjoyed this sight for several days! Beautiful poem!
Thanks Valsa. More like weeks. I watched another one this spring in another nest on the other side of the window.
