The Doing Nothing Poem by Shalom Freedman

The Doing Nothing

THE DOING NOTHING

The doing nothing
Kills me
I cannot bear to do nothing
I cannot bear to feel useless
I cannot bear to feel totally worthless
Doing nothing
Having nothing to do
It is one of the worst

I am old now
And many old people have nothing to do
But this is no consolation

What am I to old people
And what are they to me?

I need to do something
I need to feel my life has some value

I am writing these lines now
Because this gives me some small and very doubtful sense
Of my own value

Now that I am finishing them
What will I do next?
