The Day By The Fogged Lake Poem by Cigeng Zhang

The Day By The Fogged Lake

Rating: 5.0

The Monk Lake looked ghostly in the chilly fog
All was misty grey but the broken ices on lake
Silvery pieces floated on the surface of the lake
Icing duckweeds rattled into the diffuse smog
Numberless lights were engulfed by the fog
Who did know when a sunny flow to return to the lake?

Not only is the lake frozen but so is the poet: she keeps her emotions tightly inside, or perhaps emotions themselves are frozen by this wintry day. Your poem has sharp, clear images of the natural setting - it's the hallmark of Chinese poems as the many translated by Xu Yuanzhong attest. Perhaps you are surprised that I even mention the absence of emotion. Or is emotion implied but I don't grasp it? Your poem puts me in a Taoist frame of mind: it quiets me inside, then I look out my window and see my small lake not yet frozen but definitely cold and empty of people. This is the first poem of yours for a whole month! Your Muse is once again active in your life!

Thank you Daniel for your beautiful comment. You mentioned Xu Yuan Chong. I think we all love his translated work on Tang Poetry. Your appreciation for Chinese literature impressed me a lot. Thanks.
