The Cover Of A Magazine Poem by Paula Glynn

The Cover Of A Magazine

I see women on the covers of magazines,
And think how amazing they look,
And how I'd love to look myself,
But I am me: not a fashion model or actress,
It can be hard to reassure myself,
That I'm normal, but I am normal,
I am all too human, but perfection would be nice,
And to have a makeover and really feel good about myself,
Not eat meal replacements and be anti social,
But I love the look of models,
With all their jewellery, updos and makeup,
And I love the lipstick look,
But some lipsticks cost £20,
I need my money for essential items,
And I always end up buying cheaper lipsticks,
That are nice, but aren't so well known,
But I should be able to look good on a budget,
I mean, I love these expensive perfumes,
They smell like heaven: like a garden of roses,
And I love my daily shower, to feel good,
And magazines do influence me:
I love the glamour look, but I don't want pressure,
I want to still eat without worrying,
And to accept - and deal with - bad hair days,
Like I often do, and I love makeup,
But often go without foundation,
My skin is clear and doesn't need it,
But I love cleansing products for the face,
Scrubs, masks and toners that feel so luxurious,
Like silk, and I love moisturiser,
My skin becoming soft and smooth,
But I pay a reasonable price,
I can't spend loads on a small 50g pot of cream:
I am on a budget and need to account for all my purchases,
But how I love going to the shops,
And buying all those beauty products!
They're so rich and tempting: I just can't get bored,
And the cover of any magazine is alluring and captivating,
Like Dior's Nude foundation advert,
And all those perfume ads,
For they stir the senses and emotions,
And makes a long, hot bath a gift from heaven.
