The Cop Poem by Phillip Dodham Cormier

The Cop

He stands beside me
I can feel his breath on my neck
He paces back and forth
He is waiting for me to speak
For me to admit
He stares at me
His uniform does not frighten me
No good or bad today
There is only one
I know my rights
I’ve been here all day
It’s time for me to leave
He says nothing
I’ve told you the truth
He still says nothing
Damn you I scream
Still nothing
What does he want from me?
I haven’t done anything
I haven’t done anything wrong
I haven’t done anything wrong lately
Yet I am still here
And he is still across from me
My eyes close
I am alone
My eyes open
I am alone
My fist flies forward
The mirror shatters
Maybe now I can forget
