The Boulevard And The Lion Poem by John Courtney

The Boulevard And The Lion

traded eyes
last night
for the puzzle's heart
the one that staggers stolen behind the sun
the one that keeps the sun crippled in front of the answer
where the answer is the lion
where the eyes are more tired than the engine

got free
last night
watched some of the best memories of my life
dance like capture down the avenue
selling me off for fifty dollars
every hour
last night

found tomorrow lonely in a cage
last night
left it alone, left the money with the earth
who kept begging me to leave the earth with the money
the earth was the one that challenged the laughter
the one that gave us The Rolling Stones for free
dressed my friends up
and me and the earth watched death leave the bar wearing a mini-skirt

wasn't going to use these words
last night
then remembered where I came from
where the boulevard was always watching the rain devour the window
where prostitution met catholicism
and told the eyes to tell the engine
to tell the lion to stop yelling at the pilot

traded eyes last night
for things
got free last night
for things

last night was all about you, so tell the engine.
