The Battle Poem by Michele Weston

The Battle

She was only twenty,
When the doctors gave her the news,
The cancer was back again,
In remission for many years,
Treatment must start again,
The battle has just begun.

She was scared and all alone,
The medicine just made her more sick,
She smiled through the pain,
Kept her secret locked inside,
Afraid to let anyone know the truth,
The cancer was back and only months left.

The treatments wore her out,
She had to quit her job,
Couldn't see her friends anymore,
The hospital was her new home,
Just like before, it was again,
She wanted the battle to end.

She was scared and all alone,
The medicine just made her more sick,
She smiled through the pain,
Kept her secret locked inside,
Afraid to let anyone know the truth,
The cancer was back and only weeks left.

She lay in the hospital bed,
Surrounded by friends and family,
They remembered the good times,
She smiled at those she loevd,
In her heart she knew the truth,
She was losing the battle.

She was scared and all alone,
The medicind just made her more sick,
She smiled through the pain,
Kept her secret locked deep inside,
Afraid to let anyone know the truth,
The cancer was back and only days left.

She closed her eyes two days later,
They would never open again,
Her blue eyes and beautiful soul gone,
To a better place, no pain there,
Her family wiped tears from their eyes,
The battle was over now.

She was scared and all alone,
The medicind just made her more sick,
She smiled through the pain,
Kept her secret locked inside,
Afraid to let anyone know the truth,
The cancer was back, no time left.
