The Accursed Night-Wailing Of An Insomniac Poem by Venkateswaran Krishnan Sreenivasan

The Accursed Night-Wailing Of An Insomniac

Why did the good lord create the night
When the days are warm and bright?
And the Sun bestows energy and might
To all life with his blessed light
The plants make food with chlorophyll
The cows graze to their fill
The butterflies hop for floral honey
And men sweat for money
Come sunset and all retreat to their nest
For their well earned rest
To greet the new dawn with renewed zest
Whilst I lie in bed depressed
Why did the good lord create the night
When the days are warm and bright?
I walk a mile everyday
Meditate for an hour a day
Do all that the sleep experts say
Yet have a sleep debt to pay
Why did the good lord create the night
When the days are warm and bright?
Don’t get sleep? Take the pill
That is no cure for the ill
All the treasures and pleasures we keep
Are not equal in worth to a good night’s sleep.
