Thank You For Your Service Poem by Evangelina Garcia

Thank You For Your Service

Six seconds for the soldier to sprint across his native desert
Seven seconds for him to find a target
Three seconds for him to look through the scope and find a clear shot
Two seconds for him to slip his finger around the trigger

Three seconds for him to shoot five bullets
Half a second for the bullets to reach his targets throat
Half a second too long for the soldier with the American flag pinned to the inside of his camo jacket to pivot his suede boots and run

Two seconds for him to fall face forward
Four seconds for his last breathe to escape his mouth beginning to fill with blood
Five seconds for his heart to reach a flat pulse
And one second for the newly found widow to realize why there were soldiers in their Class A uniforms at her doorstep.
