Talk Of Conceits Poem by Michael Pruchnicki

Talk Of Conceits

Once upon a time a conceit
was a term that enjoyed a vogue
among poets as diverse
as petrarchan or metaphysical,
baroque or even advocates
of gongorism

Oh, and they tried to spell
and use syntax to enhance
their text, too - a blemish
of which none of us
is guilty in our eyes!

Today it's a neutral term
except when applied to a poet
who over-reaches according
to his vocal critics;
though readers disagree
who relish striking
and effective similes
and metaphors in the verse
that comes their way!

Just to clear the fetid air
that clings to some postings
about subjects the writers
apparently know nothing about!
