Take For Granted Poem by David Harris

Take For Granted

How many times have we heard
someone say, sorry I left
my reading glasses somewhere.
It is a sad fact of life
that so many people in our society
cannot actually read.
They feel ashamed they can’t
which to me is very sad.
They think people look down on them
because they cannot read.
Which should never be the case.
They should never have to make excuses
for what some of us take for granted.
As they grow older they shy away looking for help.
The sad thing is there are organizations willing to help.
There are people who dedicate their lives to help others.
They seek no recognition for the kind work they do.
Helping people is their reward,
something we all should do.
Never look down on people
because they cannot do thing we take for granted.
Help them if you can on a one to one basis
so they don’t feel embarrassed.
You don’t think you can’t do it,
you can only say that
after you have tried.
Because until you try
you will never know.
