“supposed To”… Poem by derrick foster

“supposed To”…

But you’re “supposed to”…
Am I? Well you just wait for that to happen.

“Supposed to” doesn’t work for me.
All I have to do is stay black, pay taxes and die
And I’m not getting that right.
Since I’m no good at that, I’m not going to do it anymore.
So if you think I’m going to do what you say
I’m “supposed to” you’ll be disappointed
Living up to that expectation just isn’t what I’m about
I opt to not do what I’m “supposed to”
You do raise an interesting question that I can’t answer.
If I’m silent when you say I’m “supposed to”
You may as well accept that I won’t be doing what I’m “supposed to”
This just won’t do. The phrase makes me stubborn
Suppose you try and do what you say I’m “supposed to” do
As you can see, it doesn’t work for you or me
“Supposed to” opens the door to expectations I can’t live up to
It also closes the window of opportunity for you
You won’t be getting what you think I’m “supposed to” do
I suppose I could but I won’t because I don’t want to
Do what you think I’m “supposed to
