Summer Blindness Poem by Shawn Montgomery

Summer Blindness

Once there was a young girl and boy
Who met at the start of summer.
The girl took care of the boy
For he was blind
And she felt sorry for him
The boy would ask
'Why do you take care of me? '
And she would answer
'Because I want to'
But soon summer ended
And the girl had to leave for school

The next year the boy
Went to the bus stop
And waited with a rose in hand
To greet his friend
But she did not come
Patiently, the boy waited
Every summer

A few years went by
And the girl returned
And the teen boy
Greeted her with a rose
And she took care of the blind boy
And he would ask
'Why do you take care of me? '
And she would answer
'Because I want to'
But soon summer ended
And the girl had to leave for college

The next year the teen boy
Went to the bus stop
And waited with champagne in hand
To celebrate with his friend
But she did not come
Patiently, the boy waited
Every summer

A couple years later
And the girl returned
And the boy
Celebrated her graduation with champagne
And so she took care of the blind teen
And he would ask
'Why do you take care of me? '
And she would answer
'Because I want to'
But soon summer ended
And the girl had to leave
To nurse for a refugee camp

The next year the man
Went to the bus stop
And waited with ring in hand
To propose to his love
But she did not come
Patiently, the man waited
Every summer

Many years later
And the women returned
And the man
Told the women he wasn't blind
And then he proposed to his love
She asked him
'Why didn't you tell me you weren't blind? '
And he answered
'I thought you wouldn't come back'
And soon the summer ended
And the women stayed.

Quite a narrative poem with a twist at the end. Read mine – We the Unencumbered – Adeline
