Street Corner Girl Poem by olivia helmes

Street Corner Girl

mama and daddy told me my body was precious
everyone else thought so too
mamma and daddy taught me right from wrong
everyone else taught me how to beat the rules
mamma and daddy made sure I got an education
I made sure I skipped class
Mamma and daddy cried when a newspaper said local street corner girl shot at drug bust
Now everybody always knows where I’m at
