Street Children's Painting Dream Poem by Sandra Martyres

Street Children's Painting Dream

Rating: 5.0

It was the Mumbai Street Children's
Talent scouting evening out
We gave them a canvas,
An easel and a box of paints
Told them not to exercise
Any restraint
The picture was theirs to paint

Hectic activity followed
Vibrant colours were mixed
In the palettes before the brushes
Went into use
Some went for bold strokes
Others used pastels and
And went for milder strokes

We watched the transformation
Blank canvases soon took colour
The pictures ranged from
Sunny skies and butterflies
To moonlit nights and fireflies
Some did give nature a pass
And opted to paint the school class

After working for an hour and half
The pictures were ready for display
The children proudly handed in
Their very own works of art
And anxiously awaited
As the judges went on stage
To review the paintings and
Make their choices known

For the young artists
It was a defining moment
As they waited for the results
Three of them would be selected
To represent Street Children's Block
At the Inter-school competition
This would help them pay
For their further education
Without having to rely on families
Already suffering deep deprivation

The prizes went to the three best
Original paintings and for the rest
We have made it our life’s mission
To try and find for them admission
Seeking corporate sponsorships
And wherever possible even scholarships
So that they can realise their dreams
Without making any parents scream.

Sandra you asked for my honest comments...well here goes...you gently took me by the hand and walked me through every one of those poor kids... each in turn painted for me a picture as only kids can, Sandra this is simply the most adorable poem I have read on ALL OF POEMHUNTERS. My daughter has an art workshop... I am framing this poem on our wall... that is how mush I enjoyed it! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Regards Alf

Wow, so you really reside in Mumbai..this poem is a good window into what some of your days are like. Already it was obvious what a compassionate person you were in your soul; but not only are you compassionate, you are an activist, which is the best example of it. Bless you in your working, I know that you are making a big difference. (smile)

'And wherever possible even scholarships So that they can realise their dreams Without making any parents scream' wow that was so well expressed indeed..very effective..I liked the narrative manner in which you presented the poem too, yet some children doesnt use those money to good effect, and you know the tragedy is such with a mere bribe even an arsitocrte's son can get a bursary or a scholarship here..world is filled with inhumainty and injustice..thanks 10+++.

I love this poem because I had my children taught painting by a watercolorist Ruth Tuck who let their imaginations fly without too much technical restraint. I also love it because of the work you do in encouraging these children who don't have the benefit of money to realize their dreams. You are truly amazing Sandra and I commend you for your poem and inspiration to others. 10 Karin Anderson

What a wonderful organization you are part of to do such important work for these children. They all deserve the best life has to offer and you helped to make them feel important and special. You have given them hope. This is a wonderful poem and shows what heart and compassion you have, sandra. I love it! A '10+! ' Warm Wishes, Marilyn
