Strangling Ties Poem by Nika McGuin

Strangling Ties

When she walks in crying
and you, the culprit, are whying
my anger comes out of hiding
connections with you, I'm all but denying
always with her, I'll be siding

If, like seconds before this situation,
you remove her from the equation
then, you're just sufferable enough
I can dub you a diamond, although very rough

Alas, it's undeniable
my bond with her is much more pliable
and mine with you is stubborn, inflexible
it's oh so fragile, quite easily breakable

These facts, and our lives you callously mishandle
and her heart you've chosen to mangle
embedding my emotions in such a tangle
until subsequently, our ties you do strangle

Your use of rhyme in this poem is really remarkable. I never before felt rhyme the way I did reading this poem. Rhyme is not just the repetition of vowel sounds, it's also a thread that connects each rhyming word to another one until you have a tangle of threads and words. And who would want to untangle all of that? It's just like the poem's message about the tangle of emotions, people, problems. You're mixed into that tangle but to try to untangle it would just get you more entangled. Your poem is wise. It knows these ties can be strangling.
