Stranger Poem by Genevieve Pilat

Stranger

Walking down the street just an ordinary day
Until in the distance I see your face
How your face looks familiar; I've seen it before
Yet the name I must say I cannot place.

I know you from somewhere, whoever you are
You're a memory from my past
Were you an old friend I'd lost contact with
Or a lover we knew that wouldn't last?

I wish I could remember where I have seen you
I feel quite foolish to forget
Were you really unimportant for me to misplace
Who you were and how we met?

You see it's quite funny how things turn out
You think those close will forever stay
Yet in time those connections you held so dear
Become strangers that slowly fade away.

Am I sure that I know you? I start to second guess
My judgment for I may be wrong
I apologize for my forgetting and unsure mind
My memory must not be very strong.

We're about to cross paths meet face to face
Once again or for the first time
Should we give acknowledgement or simply ignore
If we did it wouldn't be a crime.

We pass one another, no eye contacts made
And in seconds the moment does end
We move on with our lives no impact to take
Guess my memory was just pretend.

It's a shame really for I thought you were someone
I once cared for but I guess I was blind
For I thought I'd remember you but it seems I haven't
You're just a stranger in my mind.
