Step Into Their Shoes Poem by Joel Duncan

Step Into Their Shoes

Take a good look into my eyes,
What do you see?
What's the difference between you and me?
You think because I'm gay I must like you too,
I don't fancy every man,
When I feel love I know that it's true,

I can see the look you give me,
When I pass you by,
It must be bad for your reputation,
To hang around with a gay guy,

So instead I'll go hide away,
Lock myself in the gloom,
Because I'm a monster,
What else should I do?

Should I chain myself up?
Attach a muzzle on my face,
Lock the door to my cage,
Toss the key far away.

You say that's extreme,
I wouldn't be so mean,
Lock you up like an animal,
I haven't got that evil in me.

But little do you know,
This is how I feel,
When I have to tell my parents,
Over a nice Sunday meal,
They slap me and throw me out,
I've nowhere to stay,
My own family have stopped loving me,
Just because I'm gay.

People are guided by what they think is right,
The law against gay people is losing the fight,
We are soldiers lining the law in our range,
Let's take action today,
So everything can change.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
For the record, I'm not gay but I do have gay friends. Just because someone is gay doesn't make them any different to you. It's not who you love that defines you, it's what you stand for which is the true meaning of being human.
