Standing Up, Sitting Down Poem by Ima Ryma

Standing Up, Sitting Down

1955 was the year
That Rosa Parks chose to fight back,
Becoming a staunch pioneer
Of civil rights for persons black.
In the back of the bus she sat,
And she continued to sit tight,
When the bus driver ordered that
She give her seat up to a white.
Her subsequent arrest and trial
Triggered a city bus boycott,
Sending a message most worthwhile,
That the nation never forgot.

Rosa Parks made good history
By sitting down for dignity.
