Spider Poem by Susy Evelyne

Spider

Rating: 5.0

Spider!
Should have stayed an outsider,
Should have known we’d not abide her.

So I caught her
In a jam jar. There, that taught her!
Then said goodnight to Arachne’s daughter.

Next morning
As I entered the kitchen, yawning,
Sad realisation was dawning:

She’s a dead ‘un.
All rolled up in spider heaven.
Oh, my guilty heart was leaden.

Out of order,
Eight hours, airless, to have stored her.
Now she’s crossed the final border.

In the garden,
Trying my sensibilities to harden,
I said: ‘Poor ex-spider, grant me pardon.’

But she was clever.
No way dead and gone forever.
I shook the jar – she ran hell for leather!

We all loved this poem. It was such a comical relief to discover she'd been pretending to have died. I'm so glad we read it. I've made it one of my favourites to read again.

This had me chuckling, and I kinda knew what was coming before it hit. You can't trust spiders you know.
