Sphere Of Influence Poem by J.M Berger

Sphere Of Influence

Sometimes I let my anger get the best of me
I drink too much caffeine
I have dreams about impossible futures
And I have bad days that go on for far too long
Maybe in some ways, I am kind of a pushover
But I can always spare some change, if I think it’ll bring some
We say things like that because we think they sound noble
But we know our generation is no better than the last
That’s why I have dreams about impossible futures
Sequels to great events, that never happened in the past
Help, save, love or just tolerate me
Teach me but don’t preach
Lead me, but don’t lead me on
Accept me
Don’t get pulled into the sphere of influence
Where you go in for the hug and get stabbed in the back
I can speak a little, but I’m not fluent in deceit
I am good at talking smack
I don’t eat too many decent meals anymore
These days it’s only midnight snacks
And I get weird dreams, about possible futures
Where commitment is for real, and there is no turning back
