Sonnet: Life's Lesson Poem by Dr John Celes

Sonnet: Life's Lesson

For all the good, I did for them in life,
All that I got was hatred, jealousy;
My hate for wealth and fame put me in strife,
Back-stabbing friends and foes who were lousy!

For all the kindness, I bestowed on men,
And help I rendered though they didn't deserve,
Brick-bats came flying and I said ‘amen! '
O God, I asked, ‘Must I such persons serve? '

For all the patience, I had used so free,
My faith in God does save me till the end;
No force on earth can instil fear in me,
My principles, I never dared to bend.

The world I know is treacherous, unfair;
But Maker loves me much, protects, takes care!
