Sometimes A Quiet Hero Among Us Poem by Hubert Wilson

Sometimes A Quiet Hero Among Us

Collin McKinney's great-great-great-grandson,
H. W. likewise had community respect second to none.
Ancestor an author of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
Reputed to be the oldest signer in attendance.
Accolades of a Texas county and city with his name.
Community school teaching became H. W.'s subdued fame.
Taken by his passion to educate and care.
Everyone impressed by this Texas historical heir.
Rare few knew how in World War II he served in an unassuming way.

Managing to survive as a B-17 bomber crew chief in aerial fray.
Observant, passionate and caring like his forefather of historical renown.
Determined to nurture his students and his small town.
Educating his students to succeed.
Learning became a vital part of their creed!

Collin McKinney 4-17-1766 to 9-9-1861
H. W. McKinney 4-20-1921 to 11-29-2009
