Solitary Woman Poem by Mike Barrett

Solitary Woman

In a window
Near a park
Behind wispy curtains,
Two sad and lonely eyes
View the world.

From time to time
I've seen her wizened hands
Feeding the birds
That gather 'round her ledge
Near six each afternoon.

These birds,
They've seen her face -
All of it, I thought!

Perhaps
They've even shared
Her memories
Of by-gone years:
Those innocent
And happy days
Of laughter,
Of love,
Of motherhood!

Yet
Now, it's come to this -
Two sad and lonely eyes.

Hauntingly beautiful.
Beautiful,
But so painfully alone!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem arrived during the summer of '66 shortly after my arriving in Montreal. I'd seen this woman many times feeding the birds on her windowsill while walking up MacKay Street after work.
