Soft Rain In A Summer Garden Poem by Patrick William Kavanagh

Soft Rain In A Summer Garden

The rain falls softly on the daisy sprinkled, summer grass,
Spreading tiny, sparkling globes of silvery light.
It scatters gentle ripples on the pond,
that just a little while ago was smooth as glass.
And still I sit and gaze with lazy eyes at all the beauty,
and at something just beyond my sight.

The smell of dew on earth and leaves and summer flowers,
Distracts me just a little from a reverie
that may have lasted minutes or for many hours.
I cannot tell, I cannot even quite remember what I saw,
But still I feel the peace, the calmness that it gave to me,
As if I'd glimpsed a land of magic, through an open door.

I cannot bear to leave this place, despite the rain,
So much solace, so much love has filled my heart.
I realise that life is bitter-sweet,
That joy will always come to wash away life's pain.
We struggle and we strive,
We weep until there are no longer any tears to cry.
We give in to despair,
and then we raise our heads,
and once again we try.
