Society Poem by Cynthia Fielding

Society

Cameron has made the basic schoolboy mistake
Of allowing the left
To define the argument

Why detoxify?
What 'nasty party'?

Every time the BBC talk about Thatcher
They start with divisive milk snatcher Thatcher
Who said there was no such thing as society
And was responsible for the Poll Tax riots

Some miners struck
Others worked
And were ostracised

By whom?

Thatcher?

Or the divisive LEFT? !

The Treasury forced Thatcher
At the time Education Secretary
To end the VESTIGES
Of school milk distribution

But who originally started
Snatching milk from schoolchildren?
LABOUR!

Thatcher did, indeed,
Say there was no such thing as society
And words that could be paraphrased
As 'only you & me'

But they are misquoted
From a three PAGE interview
About how society had to protect
And help the old
And the poor
And the weak
And the vulnerable
Especially children

The 'quote' was simply explaining
That society wasn't an abstract entity
Or a magic money tree
But you & me!

And what was wrong with the Poll Tax?
