So It Is Christmas Poem by Olivia Slemmermann

So It Is Christmas

It’s a time for celebration
A time for joy and goodwill
For young ones and the old
So this is Christmas I am told

For those out in the trenches
In tension, fear and cold
Those in the dessert hardship untold
Braving the heat
And chill of the night

So this is Christmas
For you and for me
For the differently abled
The homeless on the street

So this is Christmas
Who will come share with me
The pleasantries and wishes
And the joyous reunions

Will it be those in the trenches
Or the homeless on the streets
For this is Christmas
For the sick and the poor

For those who are bereaved
And those all alone
Come share it with me
Just how it was meant to be

Let’s spread the word
Of love and good will
Peace for mankind
As Christmas is meant to be

With hunger for none
For this is Christmas
Let’s not forget
The little ones who stop

At the shops and stare
In yearning wonderment
Those displayed so rare
They know it’s never meant

The sights of bright fairy lights
Gifts delightful to sight
No goodies for them
They know their plight

How would you like
To spend it with me
To spread some joy
Among those who grieve

This is the magic of Christmas
Just the way it’s meant to be
