Smoke It Away Poem by sal carter

Smoke It Away

Wake down
Icy cold and unlit
World spins
In blank greys and golds
Stumble for a mug
And watch the tea slowly spiral up, fading out.

Light
Watch it flicker, smoulder,
Half-burn.

Smoke it away,
Smoke it away,

World rises
Step by step
Focusing.

See the washing
hanging dead on the line
see the curve of the rose branch

unlittered with clichéd petals
thorns curved
like a shark fin

Smoke it away,
Smoke it away,

Slowly brings you up
Meeting the sober morning mist
